LAKE LUZERNE – A 15-year-old was killed on Saturday when a tubing and rafting company’s bus overturned on a trip to the Hudson River, authorities said.
The Tubby Tubes bus was carrying 34 people when it crashed, authorities said. The victim, who worked as a river guide for the company, was thrown from the bus.
"The passenger was ejected and (went) underneath the bus," said Douglas Olson, second assistant chief of the Luzerne-Hadley Fire Department.
The victim, whose name and gender were not released, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, Olson said.
Six other people were taken to Glens Falls Hospital with minor injuries, Olson said. One person was treated for an ankle injury, State Police said.
MECHANICAL PROBLEMS EYED
The blue-painted, modified school bus tipped over on its passenger side at about 12:30 p.m. at the intersection of River Rd. and Thomas Rd., State Police said.
Accident reconstruction experts spent the next few hours taking detailed measurements to piece together what happened. The bus driver was not charged or ticketed.
"Initial investigation points to mechanical problems with the bus, but the investigation is ongoing," State Police said, without elaborating on the nature of those problems.
Olson, of the fire department, said the bus was not equipped with seatbelts for the passengers. It was unclear whether that played a role in the teen’s death.
No one was available for comment at Tubby Tubes. A message on the company’s phone informs callers that the business will be closed Sunday due to "unforeseen circumstances."
