The gates open at Saratoga Race Course

SARATOGA - The crowd has been streaming into the Saratoga Race Course steadily since the gates opened at 11 a.m.

The 146th season officially begins at 1 p.m. but the action began early Friday morning.

At a little before 7 a.m. the race began.

Eager fans race into the backyard to get their pick of the picnic tables that will be their headquarters for Opening Day 2014.

Jake Keck was the first in line. He and his buddies got here at 12:30 a.m.

The early birds get the tables. Jake and his buddies scored a dozen of them.

Before the sun was completely up, the stars of the show were out for their morning workouts.

With trainers like Gary Contessa keeping a watchful eye.

Opening day is like Christmas for a lot of area racing fans. And NYRA didn't want to disappoint them, adding things like more than 700 new high-definition televisions and improved audio.

With all the preparations complete, it was time to open the gates on the 2014 Saratoga racing season.

Grandstand admission went up to $5 this year.

The clubhouse is $8.

Season passes are on sale at the track and at Stewart's Shops through August 1st.

Post time for the first race Friday and most days, is 1 p.m.

32,913 is the record opening day attendance.
