ALBANY - Robert Redford has spent some time in the Capital Region. One of his big roles, starring opposite Barbra Streisand, was shot in part at Schenectady's Union College.

He also shared the screen with long-time local anchorman Ernie Tetrault in Sneakers. Redford was the star, Ernie had a small but important part.

But it's Redford's part as the Sundance Kid that ties him to the lawsuit on file right here at the Albany County Court House.

Redford is taking on the state Department of Taxation and Finance.

He sold an interest in the Sundance TV channel and says he paid taxes on the gain in Utah.

Even so, New York State wants him to pay almost $1.6 million dollars for what Redford considers the gain he already paid in Utah.

Among other things, Redford lawyer calls New York's claim "constitutionally infirm".

On screen the Sundance Kid and his pal Butch had a more direct way of dealing with institutions.

A spokesman for the Department of Taxation and Finance declined comment on the lawsuit.

No court dates have yet been set.
