ALBANY - As college students go back to school, firefighters want to make sure they’re staying safe.

A controlled burn demonstration was held at Albany College of Pharmacy on Thursday morning.

There were 272 students watching as an eight-foot by eight-foot dorm room was set on fire.

The demonstration was part of orientation week for students.

The college says it’s meant to educate new students on the dangers associated with a fire in the residence hall.

”Many of you are beginning to live on your own for the first time in your life, the first time in independent housing and with that independence comes responsibility,” says President T. Gregory Dewey.

“We’re bringing you the education and showing you how quickly fire develops. Fire doubles in size every thirty seconds,” says Albany Fire Chief Joseph Toomey.

The chief says an average of 38 people are injured in campus fires a year.
