ALBANY - The death toll from Monday's earthquake in China could jump to 50,000 according to the Chinese government.
The government is now asking the Chinese public for donations. They are asking for rescue equipment and tools, including hammers, shovels and rubber boats.
Locally, General Electric has already raised more than $3,000 and the Chinese Community Center in Latham is calling on its 500 members to help.
"It's very devastated. Our thoughts and prayers go to the victims and victims families," said Lilly Miaw of the community center.
"Many of us were in tears. We saw the TV and e-mailed the images among our members. Therefore several of us decided we have to do something," Miaw said.
The community center is hosting a concert at RPI on Sunday with all donations going to China. It's from 1 to 4 p.m. at West Hall.
They are also accepting donations at the community center. The address there is 11 Avis Drive, Latham, NY 12110.
