"Australia" is too big for it's own good

The continent Australia is the star of the movie "Australia," which makes sense, since it doesn't service most of its actors that well.

Director Baz Luhrmann has made a lengthy movie that doesn't meet its aim to be an epic, but it's a fine travelogue for the homeland of most of the players involved.

Nicole Kidman -- reuniting with Luhrmann after "Moulin Rouge!"-- portrays a member of English aristocracy who goes you-know-where to retrieve her husband. She soon finds that won't be possible, leaving her open to the charms and the muscles of Hugh Jackman, as a worker on the estate owned by the husband.

What follows is meant to be a king-sized romance, but the characters aren't all that compelling, even if the main actors look good. Actually, the "Australia" cast member who fares best is a young man named Brandon Walters, who just might find himself with an Oscar nomination as a youth who moves Kidman to the point where she considers adopting him. (You might consider it, too.)

As for the rest of "Australia," the movie and the land, it's certainly big. However, as we know, quantity does not necessarily mean quality. There's a lot to "Australia" length-wise ... otherwise, except for that one young co-star, not so much.
