I was reading my good friend Peter DeWitt's website the other day, www.petermdewitt.com and cracking up. Peter is a principal, children's book author and frequent guest on WNYT's Midday Show. He speaks about education issues and will be joining me soon to talk about testing-specifically state testing and kids. I was laughing because he had pictures of himself when he was younger and was describing how he finally got in the groove and began finding success in education.
We often laugh about him graduating from high school 262 out of 266. But, now there is no stopping him, he's getting his doctorate, written children's books, lectures, you name it-he's doing it.
The point is sometimes it takes a while for that something to click and education to become exciting. But all the teacher's I've interviewed say they live for that, that moment when the light comes on and the student gets it. Today , I interviewed a teacher and students from Catholic Central High. The students praised their teacher, who has been selected as one of the best in the area, because they say he gives them a voice, a chance to give their opinions and express themselves about whatever they are studying on a given week. It was fun just sitting in the class watching the teacher and the student and those light bulb moments.
Can you remember that moment education became fun for you?
