SCHENECTADY - The highest paid officer in the Schenectady Police Department is being investigated for ducking out while on duty.

It's not just an administrative thing. Officer Dwayne Johnson is also being investigated for possibly breaking the law.

It all started when a reporter with the Daily Gazette spotted police cruiser No. 10 parked at the corner of Queen Philomena Boulevard and Sir Benjamin Way for hours on end at several different times.

Schenectady resident Matt Dubrey saw it too.

"There was definitely a car on that street," Dubrey said.

Dubrey lives across the street and saw the car parked next to an apartment building.

"I personally thought they were investigating something there, if there was activity or something, but it would be various times," he said.

Car 10 is assigned to Johnson. He's been on the force for eight years. He's the highest paid police officer in Schenectady. Johnson made almost $169,000 last year -- most of it in overtime.

Public Safety Commissioner Wayne Bennett says Johnson is always taking on extra shifts.

"I haven't seen him, I'm surprised. Really. Yeah, because he's here all the time. I mean literally, he's here all the time," Bennett said.

The Gazette brought their story to the police chief and by tracking the GPS unit in Johnson's car it was confirmed that the car was idle for a significant period of time -- several times.

"Why was this car idle? What was he doing?" Bennett asked.

One neighbor says he believes Johnson has relatives who live in the building. So there's speculation Johnson would stop here during his overnight shift to take a nap.

"If we find there's reason to believe violations of law were committed then we will be in fact speaking with District Attorney Carney," Bennett said.

Johnson is still working. Bennett says they may alter his assignment and keep him in doors.
