Tedisco, Murphy meet for debate

MENANDS - Both sides are claiming victory in Tuesday night's debate in the race for the Capital Region's open congressional seat. Jim Tedisco and Scott Murphy squared off in the studios of NewsChannel 13.

The candidates said very little to each other as they settled into their chairs in the studio shortly before air time in their first live televised face-to-face meeting.

Weeks of largely negative television ads have marked sharp divisions between the Murphy and Tedisco camps.

The biggest divide is over Congress' economic stimulus package and the AIG bonuses, which were brought up repeatedly during the one hour broadcast, and sparked the most heated exchanges.

"Now we need to work to get that money back. That's what I want to do if I go to Washington, get busy getting to work to make sure we get that money back for you the taxpayer," Murphy said.

"But we shouldn't have given it away in the first place," Tedisco quickly responded. He says Congress didn't do its homework before passing the legislation.

This debate came one week before the March 31 special election.
