GLENS FALLS - Even in victory, Scott Murphy talked about how difficult these last weeks have been. Waiting, as ballots were recounted. Absentee ballots -- opened and contested.
But finally Friday afternoon, with Murphy's ahead by 399 votes, his opponent Republican Jim Tedisco called Murphy to concede.
""He offered his congratulations, he was very gracious, offered to help with anything he could do and to make sure we work together to represent the 20th district," said Murphy.
Tedisco did not make an appearance, but issued a statement saying, quote: "Ultimately, it became clear that the numbers were not going our way and that the time had come to step aside and ensure that the next Congressman be seated as quickly as possible."
Murphy supporters were full of enthusiasm, relieved that it's over.
"Reading the paper everyday, watching the news, watching the tally. Happy with the outcome," said Ganesvoort resident Heidi Marine.
Murphy's wife Jen said when her husband heard the news, it was happiness...and some jitters.
"He said 'uhh, I feel the responsibility of over 700,000 people' and I said, I think that's great that you're nervous about that," said Jen Murphy.
"Yeah, the last few days, I've been definitely feeling the butterflies a little bit. Knowing that it's a big responsibility and that I'm excited taking it on but I know there's a lot of work to be done and I've got to get to work," said the Congressman Elect.
But before that works begins, Murphy said he'd hang out with his biggest and smallest supporters, his wife and 3 children.
"We just talked about it. I think we're going to Pizzeria Uno. Big night!"
Murphy said President Obama called to congratulate him, and expects to be sworn in as a member of Congress next week, in Washington.
