Man accused of stealing farm equipment

WHITE CREEK -- A former Rensselaer County man faces two felony charges for allegedly stealing $78,000 worth of farm equipment from a White Creek business, police said.

Herbert Headwell, 48, was arrested recently in Ohio, where he fled after the April 12 theft of a large tractor and a windrower combine from Earthworm Equipment LLC, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

Headwell had previously owned the equipment, but it had been repossessed by Earthworm Equipment, said sheriff’s Investigator Tony LeClaire. It had been sold at auction, and the Route 22 business was storing it for the new owners, he said.

Police suspected Headwell in the theft in light of his prior ownership, and the two pieces of equipment were located on property he owns in Hoosick Falls, LeClaire said.

The machines sported a yellow-and-black color scheme when they were stolen, but the sides of the vehicles that were facing the road had been painted black in an apparent effort to camouflage them, LeClaire said.

"We located a witness who saw him take them," LeClaire said.

Officials at the business immediately suspected Headwell because of the witness’ account of the theft and Headwell’s prior ownership of the equipment, and also because of a bizarre encounter staff had with him in the days before the theft, officials said.

He went to the business, gave his name as "Peter Parker," and dropped his pants to reveal a blue-and-red leotard before leaving, LeClaire said.

Peter Parker is the secret identity of Spider-Man in the comic book and movie series.

Headwell was charged with two felony counts of third-degree grand larceny and a misdemeanor charge of criminal trespass, police said.

State Police from the Brunswick station retrieved Headwell from Ohio because State Police investigators have filed a felony scheme to defraud charge against him in connection with an alleged payroll scam related to a business he ran in Rensselaer County, officials said.

He was sent to Rensselaer County Jail for lack of bail.
