Jewelry heist pulled off at mall store

COLONIE - Police are looking for three jewel thieves who made off with $25,000 worth of gems from a mall store Sunday.

The brazen robbery was pulled off at Glenn Peter Jewelers in Colonie Center as store personnel were distracted.

While many thieves try to disguise their identities, this group carried out their crime while the store was open in a busy mall with cameras watching.

Police say a man and woman distracted the clerk at the store while the male suspect snuck behind the counter and snatched a 1.7 carat diamond ring and loose diamonds.

"You'll actually see him get down on his hands and knees, crawl behind the counter and he uses either a tool or a key and he gets into the cabinets behind the counter," Detective Lt. John Van Alstyne said.

After gathering his loot the bandit left the store and is still on the loose. The man and woman who supplied the diversion also were long gone before the missing merchandise was discovered.

After seeing surveillance pictures that show the man gaining access to the cabinet, police are considering the possibility of an inside job.

"If it's a tool, obviously it's not an inside job. If he has a key, again it's not definitely an inside job. We'll find out how he got the key. But if you watch the video, they definitely go in there and it's orchestrated to distract the clerk and he does his thing with the cabinets," Van Alstyne said.
