Flooding causes problems across Capital Region

LATHAM - A part of Route 2 was closed off because of flooding.

Water rushed into the Simply Irresistible salon, covering the white wood floors.

Our crew couldn't get down to the basement. The water covered the stairs up to the door.

It was a packed salon during the downpour.

"And all of a sudden we heard a huge crash, smelled gas, evacuated, came outside and the water level was just out of control. The fire department came and turned the gas off and we still don't know what the big crash was," said salon owner Debbie Caprara-Tanner.

At an apartment just up the hill, their basement also flooded. Residents said it all happened so fast.

Flooding also took its toll on nearby business Elegant Fashion.

"It's dangerous. A car just went off the road. It's so scary. It turns into a lake and a river. It's so bad," said the owner, Lucia Bruno.

They are missing a large portion of their back yard where the grass, dirt, steps and patio washed away.

The Bruno family says this has happened before.

"The back yard is not there anymore, and every year we try to fix it. We get the dirt, we put the dirt back. And this happened and the dirt is gone. And now the porch is ready to fall off. And it's horrible. They have to do something," said Bruno.

Witnesses said a family was trapped in a van and had to be rescued.

Business owners said they need help from the town or state to solve this problem.

"Last time this happened, it was $20,000 in damages. And I'm sure it's $20,000 again. We've got water heaters and furnaces and electrical boxes and security systems that are under water. Every thing is going to have to be replaced. Equipment, computers, everything. It's bad. It's bad. They need to do something. I hope this opens their eyes. Something needs to be done," said Caprara-Tanner.
