Albany Wi-Fi Gets Boost

Free internet access within Albany is growing from 32 small circles of coverage to several whole neighborhoods.

When you visit the Albany Public Library, uou can log on to the internet through any of 16 desktop computers.

Or use the wireless connection like Antwan and Chyim Bowen, or Robert DeMaranville.

"It's convenient. I live close to here and the service is nice. Doesn't cost anything to me, so it's quite handy. He said.

For a couple of years there's been limited free internet access in parts of the city.

But now, thanks to a 625-thousand dollar state grant... Free internet service is being expanded to more areas.

"Connecting residents in Albany neighborhoods with resources the internet provides will not only increase their access to information for educational purposes and help our young people succeed in school, but it will also increase networking opportunities by offering access to employment postings." added Albany Mayor Jerry Jennings

The city and the internet provider, Tech Valley Communications have applied to the federal government for a 12 million dollar grant that would expand the free access citywide.

But for now it is limited to specific neighborhoods.

It will be available 24 hours a day.

But users might want to consider the seucrity of a citywide wireless network.
