Amsterdam Police make arrests for drugs, drinking

AMSTERDAM -- One's out on bail. The other's in jail. Police say one had drugs and the other drove drunk. Which would you think is still in jail? If you guessed the one charged with drug possession, you'd be wrong.

Amsterdam police said they made two arrests Sunday morning and even they couldn't believe how it happened.

First, around 2:13 AM, police say they saw Pedro Dumey of Amsterdam driving the wrong way on a section of Guy Park Avenue in the city. They stopped him on Union Street and said they found he had a suspended license and only had regular ID on him. While being taken out of the car, two small bags of white powder were found on the floor, police said. They charged Dumey with criminal possession of controlled substance, wrong way on a one way, aggravated unlicensed operation and an unlicensed driver. He is out on $300 bail.

His friend, Melissa Delgado, 38, of Hagaman, was spotted by police driving on Guy Park Avenue Extension about four hours later, 6:03 Sunday morning, without a NYS inspection sticker on her windshield. Delgado told police she was coming to Amsterdam Police HQ with friends to bail out Dumey.

"I saw a car come down the road with no inspection sticker," said officer John Thomas. "Stopped her to ask her where it was and I could tell she had been drinking."

Delgado failed field sobriety tests and was arrested for DWI. She also had two active suspensions and active bench warrant in Amsterdam City Court. She is being held on $3,000 bond.

"You think when you want to come here and bail someone out, you'd want to come here sober, with a good license and not have any warrants," Thomas said.
