Posted at: 11/08/2009 2:12 PM Capital region offered plenty this weekendIt was a busy weekend around the Capital Region, with a little something for everyone to do -- from science to service, from toys to skiing. ALBANY -- First, on Saturday, the technology of tomorrow was on display at the state of the art UAlbany Nanotech complex. More than 1,000 people visited the College of Science and Engineering as part of Community Day. Visitors got a guided tour of the world class cleanroom facilities, took part in the interactive demonstrations and hands-on activities that demonstrate the breakthroughs nanotechnology can offer.It's currently being used for research in healthcare, clean energy and environmental fields.
It's a national organization that makes blankets for children in need. Volunteers produced more than 200 blankets that will go to local children suffering from terminal disease or in foster care. "We were able to get these blankets a fantastic home to these little kids," said Melissa Mitchell, PTA VP. "And we're really excited to get these done today. And the kids are excited to be here, to volunteer and give of themselves."Several local businesses donated supplies, materials and refreshments for all those who helped out in the effort. GUILDERLAND -- Third, collectors and early holiday shoppers alike were at the 48th annual Northland Toy Show at the Polish Community Center on Washington Avenue Ext. You could buy, sell and trade vintage and newer toys from die cast metal to marbles to models. There were more than 90-tables filled with toys and collectibles for people to get some presents or some ideas for the weeks to come. ALBANY -- And finally, if you are looking for some big kid toys, you could prepare to lace up your boots and wax your boards for the annual Ski and Snowboard Expo at the Convention Center. It was filled with winter sports enthusiasts trying out the latest in boots, bindings and fashion. Alpin Haus offered demonstrations, fittings and new trends in skiing and riding. The expo was held Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
