Posted at: 11/15/2009 2:05 PM Pittsfield man charged with multiple break-in casesStefan Veremko, 28, is charged with a daytime break in, receiving stolen property and possession of ammunition without a permit for an incident last Wednesday. A further investigation links Veremko to more than a dozen crimes over the past six months.
Police say Veremko broke into a building around 3:00pm Wednesday in the 700 block of East Street, Lenox. Witnesses told police they saw a while male with a white pillow case run across the lawn and jump into a gray Hyundai Elantra that was backing away quickly from a driveway.
The witness wrote down the license plate and followed the car to a dead end road. When the Elantra came out of the dead end, it had a different license plate on it.
The Lanesborough Police Department and a State Trooper from the Lee also worked on the case.
The Hyundai was found Friday and seized by the Lenox Police. After obtaining a search warrant, the car was processed and several items were taken as evidence from recent burglaries. Veremko was called to Lenox P.D. and when he showed up was "less than cooperative with police and arrested," according to a police press release. Police said they found other items from his home, which was also searched.
Police now say Veremko is responsible for at least four B&E’s in Lenox plus ones in North Adams, Pittsfield, Richmond, Williamstown, Dalton, Hancock, Lanesborough, as well as towns in Southern Vermont and Eastern New York. Veremko is scheduled to appear for arraignment on the Lenox charges on Monday morning in Southern Berkshire District Court. The Lenox Police Department will be holding a viewing of all of the evidence seized in this case at a later date. Police area asking anyone who may have been a victim of a breaking and entering into their home and suspect that Lenox may have some property to contact their local agency first.
The investigation, conducted by Lenox Police, Lanesborough Police, Pittsfield Police, Lee Police Department, and the State Police from the Lee Barracks and Berkshire Narcotics Unit, is ongoing.
