Baby dies while sleeping with mom

FORT EDWARD - Police in Washington County are investigating the sudden death of a 1-month-old infant.

Fort Edward police were called to a home in the village at 9:43 a.m. Saturday for a report of an unresponsive child.

Police say the baby girl, whose name they are not releasing, apparently suffocated while sleeping on the couch with her mother. A police sergeant says there were no signs of injury or abuse and the death appears to be a tragic accident.

This is the second time in a month that an area baby has died while sleeping with a young mother on a couch. In Glens Falls last month, 8-month-old Hayden Jones died while his 19-year-old mom slept on the couch with him. Police in that case, also said there were no obvious signs of trauma or injury.
