Saratoga cop losing his dream job

SARATOGA SPRINGS - There've been a lot of numbers thrown around in Saratoga Springs lately -- mostly from city leaders who will give pink slips to more than two dozen city employees.

For one police officer, his dream job has a nightmare ending. It appears Officer Jason Cadoret will be one of the seven cops laid off. With his wife expecting their first child, the timing couldn't be worse.

"It's horrible timing for us. One, it's easily the holidays, but it's also Sara's pregnant and we're due in February," Jason said.

Jason and six of his colleagues, plus seven firefighters and more than a dozen public works employees are victims of a $6 million budget shortfall.

In a twist of irony NewsChannel 13 interviewed Jason in March. He said then one of the most appealing things about being a cop is job security.

"It's easier to sleep at night knowing you can go home and get up and go to a job that you really enjoy doing and it'll always be there for you," he said at the time.

But in about a month, Jason's job won't be there for him. Neither will his health care benefits and just two months later their son will be here.

"When Jay first started going to the academy I was bugging him to have a baby. He was like, 'If I get this job we can start a family,'" Sara said.

He got the job and he's been on patrol for about a year -- and now he'll be looking for another one.

But they're taking it all in stride.

"It's a horrible situation, but I'm not going to let it affect me and my pregnancy," Sara said.

"Regardless of what happens we'll still have our son, but it's going to be a struggle," Jason added.

Jason is looking for work and he prefers not to move, but accepts that he might have to.
