ATHENS - Most of Columbia County was cut off from the phone and internet after service was knocked out by an early morning fire in neighboring Greene County.
The fire broke out around 5 a.m. at the Slice of Athens pizza shop in Athens. When firefighters arrived, there were flames shooting out of every window.
"The fire burned so hot and so long that the wires here in front of the building dropped to the ground. We currently have no cable, no phone service, no fiber optic to the village, we're hoping to get that back soon,” said Athens Fire Chief John Greco.
The chief told NewsChannel 13 the business is a total loss. No one was hurt. Phone and internet service has been restored.
