According to the Federal government, nearly 400 children drown in pools and spas each year and more than 60 percent of those drownings take place in pools that are owned by the victim's family or friends.
The Capital District YMCA sponsors a program called Splash. It teaches children basic swimming skills and the importance of water safety.
The Y is the largest operator of swimming pools in the country with more than 2,200 pools.
