Kowtowing to rules, Cabot drops 'Vermont' logo

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The Cabot Creamery Cooperative has been synonymous with Vermont since its founding in 1919. But the maker of cheese, butter and other dairy products is phasing out labels with the state's name in its logo.
    
The word "Vermont" stamped over a green outline of the state is being dropped in favor of a green barn and the words "Owned by our Farm Families in New York & New England."
    
State officials are worried about the change, saying Cabot helps promote other Vermont products and even tourism.
    
But the company says it needs to comply with Vermont's truth-in-labeling law, and that not all the milk and cream it uses come from the state.
    
Officials are considering changing state law to let Cabot keep the Vermont reference, but the company says it won't change its logo back.
