Senator Chuck Schumer is working to give New York State residents access to free whooping cough vaccines.
Senator Schumer says the number of cases of whooping cough, or pertussis in the state have tripled in the last year.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this could be the worst year for whooping cough in this country in half a century.
Whooping cough is very contagious and especially dangerous for young children. Schumer is calling on the federal government to work with state health departments to provide free vaccines.
