EAST SYRACUSE - Thruway Officials tried to make their case for a 45% truck toll increase in East Syracuse today.
They encountered a large crowd at a public hearing on the rate hike.
The public hearing is a required step before thruway officials can act on their proposed 45% increase.
If majority ruled, there would be no question.
They doubled the size of the original meeting room today and still had many people standing.
Most of the people that showed up were not convinced by official’s reasons for the 45% truck toll increase.
After holding tolls steady for 17 years, Thruway officials are proposing their fifth increase since 2005. While the current administration blames past leadership for waste and financial gimmicks, the thruway is set up so that toll increases will never stop.
At the hearing 35 people signed up to give their thoughts, including central New York assemblymen of both parties.
