There's no doubt 7-year-old Tiara is a daddy's girl. But because her dad, 46 year old Ted Islas is battling leukemia -- these days they're hanging out in his hospital room at Albany Medical center where he's been a patient since July 1.
Ted is also dad to 9 year old Mateo and 11 year old Tate was diagnosed with leukemia in September 2009. A sergeant with the State Police, Jennifer says he was having trouble playing the sports he loves, basketball, and running.
A doctor's appointment changed their world; not only did they get the diagnosis of leukemia, he needed a blood transfusion, immediately.
Jennifer says he's had hundreds of transfusions to keep him alive, through chemo, a stem cell transplant, and again, as he battles a recurrance of the disease.
They were so close to him getting a bone marrow transplant from a donor - but the donor bailed out and then he came out of remission.
NewsChannel13 and the Red Cross are teaming up for our “Save a Life Blood Drive” this week at four locations on Thursday, September 6th from Noon until Seven.
