There's no doubt 7-year-old Tiara is a daddy's girl. But because her dad, 46 year old Ted Islas is battling leukemia -- these days they're hanging out in his hospital room at Albany Medical center where he's been a patient since July 1.
Ted is also dad to 9 year old Mateo and 11 year old Tate was diagnosed with leukemia in September 2009. A sergeant with the State Police, Jennifer says he was having trouble playing the sports he loves, basketball, and running.
A doctor's appointment changed their world; not only did they get the diagnosis of leukemia, he needed a blood transfusion, immediately.
Jennifer says he's had hundreds of transfusions to keep him alive, through chemo, a stem cell transplant, and again, as he battles a recurrance of the disease.
They were so close to him getting a bone marrow transplant from a donor - but the donor bailed out and then he came out of remission.
NewsChannel13 and the Red Cross are teaming up for our “Save a Life Blood Drive” this week at four locations on Thursday, September 6th from Noon until Seven.
You can give blood at the Southern Saratoga YMCA, the Gideon Putnam Hotel, the Amsterdam Masonic Temple or the Ciccotti Center in Colonie.
Walk-ins are always welcome, but you can make an appointment by calling 1-800-
