UAlbany outlines 2020 plan

ALBANY - The state is planting seed money in University at Albany and its three other university centers -- $35 million locally for construction projects projected to return 50 times over.
"A total job impact of over 2,300 jobs and the cumulative economic impact of nearly $1.8 billion right here in New York's Capital Region," said Michael Tucker, president of the Center for Economic Growth.
Participants in the NY SUNY 2020 presentation seemed to agree that no longer could UAlbany be seen merely as a place for education. Now it is also considered a vehicle for economic development.
"Technology transfer is in many ways the entire ball game for the state and we've spent a lot of time focusing on this area," said Cuomo.
After taking heat for cutting courses and dropping majors in recent years, today the UAlbany officials were all about growth, promising 700 new courses and 1,350 additional students.
"There's no reason we shouldn't explore things like this and growing the university, bringing more students here, bringing more staff here," said Albany Mayor Jerry Jennings. "So it's great for everyone and I really give them a lot of credit and I thank the Governor for listening to them and saying this is the right direction to go in."
