SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (AP) - An 86-year-old man is dead after a two-family home went up in flames in Schenectady.
Fire officials tell media outlets that flames were already through the roof of the two-story wooden home when firefighters arrived early Saturday morning. A family of three who lived in the upstairs apartment made it out safely, but the body of the man who lived alone on the first floor was found later.
The victim's name wasn't released.
Dan DeVito, who lived upstairs, told media outlets he was awakened by smoke alarms and tried to get everyone out. But when he tried to get to his tenant downstairs, he was held back by a wall of flames.
Deputy Fire Chief Michael Gillespie says the fire was accidental, probably from a pipe the tenant was smoking.
