MAYFIELD - A student in the Mayfield School District is battling whooping cough, also known as Pertussis.

The school district began notifying parents on Friday.

The student attends the Junior-Senior High school.

This is the latest case of whooping cough to hit the area.

Just last week, NewsChannel13 told you about an outbreak of the illness in Rensselaer County, where more than 30 cases have been reported so far this year.

The disease can be treated with antibiotics but Dr. Kelley warns it can also be deadly especially in children who have not been vaccinated.
