ALBANY - Gov. Andrew Cuomo is blaming Republican "extremists" for punishing fellow party members who voted for his initiative to legalize gay marriage in New York.

Meanwhile, a third GOP senator, Roy McDonald in Saratoga County, is sweating out a long count of absentee ballots from the Sept. 13 primary. He's trailing Saratoga County Clerk Kathleen Marchione.

Cuomo told reporters Tuesday that right-wing Republicans threatened McDonald and Sens. Stephen Saland of Poughkeepsie and Mark Grisanti of Buffalo. The fourth Republican senator who voted for gay marriage last year retired in the face of opposition in his district.

Cuomo also says he's "elated" that Saland won his primary. A judge certified his win Monday by 107 votes out of about 9,800 cast.
