HALFMOON -  A jubilant Kathy Marchione declared victory Tuesday afternoon, twelve days after Republican voters went to the polls to decide between her and two-term incumbent Senator Roy McDonald.

"I'm proud and honored to be the Republican and Conservative candidate for state senate in the 43rd District."

Marchione, the long-time Saratoga County Clerk, became the apparent winner after absentees were counted Monday. Roughly 110 votes separated the two former friends and political allies.

During her victory speech, Marchione took on the McDonald campaign for attacking her integrity in his commercials.

"I never swindled taxpayers. I never set my own salary and I never, ever will be a double dipper," said Marchione.

Marchione says McDonald hasn't called her to concede and she hasn't called him. The Republican party has about 40 days to repair the fracture caused by a heated campaign.

It took a step in that direction Tuesday, when Saratoga County G.O.P. Chair Jasper Nolan attended Marchione's victory party.

"This now Kathy's senate beginning," said Nolan.

Marchione has the Republican and Conservative lines. McDonald is backed by the Independence Party, but he hasn't said yet whether he'll campaign.
