Police prevented a man from jumping off the Menands Bridge.

They responded around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday to reports of an obviously distraught man who was looking over the railing on the bridge.

Sgt. Raymond White was first on the scene and attempted to talk the man down away from the edge. As the conversation progressed the man began to climb over the railing.

Officers Robert Smith and Christopher Rasmussen stealthily came from behind the man and pulled him back over the rail and to the ground.

The man became violent. The incident ended in a brief struggle as the officers secured the man for his own safety.

Officer Brandon Cipperly sustained a bite to the arm and Smith was taken to the hospital for repeatedly being punched and kicked.

Police say no criminal charges have been filed yet, but may be filed based upon the assault the officers had to withstand.
