QUEENSBURY, N.Y. (AP) - Warren County is shelling out $270,000 to fight an invasive species in a popular Adirondack lake.
Our media Partners at the Post-Star report that the county supervisors voted Friday to put up the money to help fight Asian clams in Lake George. The funds come from the county's tax on hotel and motel room stays.
Lake George Park Commission Executive Director Dave Wick told the supervisors the commission is hard-pressed to treat newly discovered clam colonies this fall. The work is labor-intensive, requiring divers to spread plastic mats on acres of sandy lake bottom to smother the tiny mollusks.
Asian clams reproduce quickly and can degrade water quality by causing green algae blooms. Lake George is known for its crystal-clear water and officials aggressively fight invasive species there.
