SHAFTSBURY, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont community of Shaftsbury has wrapped up celebrations commemorating the 250th anniversary of the town's chartering with a time capsule that won't be opened until the 300th anniversary.
Residents say the sealed container includes an anniversary charter, newspaper, phone book and children's essays about Tropical Storm Irene. The accounts included how they did extra laundry in preparation for the storm and how pets reacted before it hit.
The Bennington Banner reports the town's 250th committee and historical society brought a yearlong commemoration to a close Saturday with a Colonial Day Celebration at the Gov. Galusha Homestead. A panel discussion about early Vermont life in the area mentioned the importance of the local tavern and early flour mill operations.
