ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York officials say they're taking applications from municipalities for the second round of land banks, nonprofit entities formed to take control and redevelop or sell vacant or abandoned properties.

The law enacted last year authorized the creation of 10 land banks by cities or counties, with five applications approved in May.

They were for the cities of Buffalo, Lackawanna and Tonawanda and Erie County; Syracuse and Onondaga County; Schenectady, Schenectady County and the city of Amsterdam; Chautauqua County; and the city of Newburgh.

Empire State Development is responsible for selecting and approving up to five more applications. To be eligible, municipalities must be able to foreclose on tax liens.

Applications are available online.
