NASSAU, N.Y. (AP) - A bridge in eastern New York has been named after a local soldier who was killed in Afghanistan while trying to defuse a roadside bomb.
Relatives of Staff Sgt. Derek Farley were joined by elected officials and state transportation representatives for Sunday's ceremony for the official naming of the Derek Farley Memorial Bridge in Nassau.
The bridge carries Route 20 over a creek in Farley's hometown, located in rural Rensselaer County 15 miles southeast of Albany.
Farley was 24 when he was killed in August 2010 while attempting to disarm an improvised explosive device. He had received a Purple Heart for wounds suffered while deployed in Iraq.
