BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Voters in a Vermont community are facing ballot questions on whether a public elementary school should be closed and re-opened as an independent school.

Residents are voting on the fate of the North Bennington Graded School on Tuesday.  Some residents asked at a meeting Monday to postpone the vote, saying there are concerns about whether taxpayers would end up paying more.

The Bennington Banner reports members of a committee that would authorize the closing said Monday they wouldn't go ahead and do so prior to getting more answers about finances.

School officials have said projected declining numbers at the elementary school would make it difficult to avoid state penalties for higher-than-average per-pupil spending.
