Governor tours Capital Region economic development sites

TROY - What do a lab at RPI where the scientists are working on Alzheimer's research, Ecovative Design where plant waste is re-purposed into biocompatible shipping materials and the old, now vacant Union Station in downtown Albany have in common?
All three were visited Tuesday by Gov. Cuomo, who was touring area locations judged worthy for state grants in a competition where the best ideas are supposed to rise to the top.
"The best thing we can do as a state government is to stimulate the economy," the governor said. "That is the single best thing that we can do. Create jobs."
The New York Capital Research Alliance was awarded nearly $1 million in the state process.
Ecovative received $250,000 to buy equipment and machinery.
Officials say they've created 10 new jobs and leveraged $2 million in private investment with the support.
The old Union Station is a priority project for this year's state funding. It is projected to generate 150 executive and high tech jobs in downtown Albany.
