BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Voters in a Vermont community have approved closing a public elementary school and re-opening it as an independent school.

Residents voted for a committee to close the North Bennington Graded School and then lease it to the Village School of North Bennington.

The independent school's application must be approved by the state board of education.

Before Tuesday's vote, some residents were concerned whether taxpayers would end up paying more as a result.

The Bennington Banner reports the committee plans to get an opinion from a bond specialist to determine whether two school improvement bonds will become private and lose tax-exempt status and federal reimbursements with the closure of the school.
