GREENFIELD - A Greenfield man was in the Saratoga County Jail Wednesday night, charged with killing his own mother and the burying her underneath a backyard tool shed.
Joshua Mcwain of 370 Daniels Rd. was charged with second-degree murder after the body of his mother, Carol Stanford, was found under the floorboards of a shed in the backyard of the home they shared at the Garden Community Homes park.
At first glance, the yellow tape around the house of lot No. 20 and the orange pumpkins by the front steps, seemed like another house decked out for Halloween. But the white-suited forensic detectives and the uniformed sheriff's deputies gave things away.
"I am totally shocked and in total disbelief," said Debbie Altiparmarks, a neighbor. "I never would have thought of it."
What residents of the mobile home park quickly came to realize was that they were witnessing a real life Halloween horror unfold right before their own eyes.
"It really freaked me out when I found out," said Cyndi Merrill who, along with Randy Major, lives directly across the street from where Stanford's body was discovered Wednesday afternoon.
The Saratoga County Sheriff's Department says Mcwain buried her there after killing her four nights earlier by slamming her in the head several times with a blunt instrument.
"We didn't really see anything out of the ordinary," said Major. "But we always knew that they were just a little bit off."
"He would have outrages outside," Merrill said. "You could hear him out there kind of thrashing things around out by the shed."
Several neighbors say they'd often see Mcwain and his mother taking walks together around the park, but when Stanfordhadn't been see lately, one neighbor called police.
"I was curious," said Altiparmarks. "I didn't see her out in a while. So I started to get curious about it."
That curiosity led to a full-fledged homicide investigation.
"We were watching them bring her body out in a body bag," Altiparmarks mentioned, "It's like, oh my God, I can't believe it. It's happening in my own neighborhood. And he always seemed like a nice kid. I wouldn't have believed it of him."
An autopsy for Stanford is scheduled in the coming days.
Mcwain is being held without bail.
