AMSTERDAM - A barn in Amsterdam is one step closer to the Register of Historic Places thanks to a grant from the New York State Preservation League.

The Broodmare Barn is surrounded by big box shops and strip malls on Route 30.

But it's one of the surviving structures of the Hurricana Farm, built by Amsterdam Carpet mogul Stephen Sanford in the late 1800’s.

The nearly $2,000 check will enable the building to complete a State and National Register of Historic Places nomination.

The Sanford family was one of the original Saratoga racing families.

The Sanford Memorial Stakes is named for them.
