SAUGERTIES, N.Y. (AP) - Police say a worker in an upstate shale mine was killed after he became entangled in a piece of equipment.

Police say 30-year-old Stephen Wickham of Greene County was operating an industrial drill late Thursday at the Northeast Solite Corp. in Saugerties, boring holes for demolition charges.

They say he got tangled in the shaft of the machine's auger. He suffered severe injuries and died at the scene.

Besides local and state police, the U.S Department of Labor Mine Safety and Health Administration also investigated.
