Guilderland - The gas shortage in New York City, Long Island, and New Jersey is sending hundreds of people upstate to our area, and they're clearing out one item from hardware stores in order to bring gasoline back home.

At Robinson Ace Hardware, aisle 18 is where you'd normally find gas cans.

But for the past week, the store has been struggling to keep these shelves stocked.

Store Manager Bill Swartz says customers have been buying in bulk.

One customer bought 20 generators.

Another customer bought 16 gas cans, and filled them all up to bring downstate.

The pile of colorful cans is a rare sight in parts of the Capital Region right now.

And if things continue this way, this supply will soon be gone.

As of this morning, Abuchon Hardware in Glenville had about 500 gas cans available.

And Robinson Ace Hardware on Western Avenue is supposed to get a shipment of gas cans today.
