SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) - The head of a construction trade association says New York's building contractors are frustrated with the slow pace of a state regulatory review of shale gas drilling, but they're hopeful the end is in sight.
The Department of Environmental Conservation last week filed for a 90-day extension on completing new drilling regulations and released revised regulations for public comment starting Dec. 12. The state has had a moratorium on drilling since DEC's environmental review started in 2008.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo says shale development will only be allowed if shown to be safe.
Mike Elmendorf, president of the state Association of General Contractors, says shale gas development is a top priority for the association. A panel discussion on the topic is scheduled Wednesday at the association's annual conference in Saratoga Springs.
