SCHENECTADY - Fire investigators are trying to figure out what started a fire at a mostly vacant building on the 200 block of State Street.

It broke out around 5:30 Thursday evening. The owner of the building lives in Syracuse and tells the Schenectady fire chief that only the caretaker should have access to the building, but two people who claim to live there showed up at the scene.

Firefighters have been unable to reach the caretaker, so they are searching the building floor by floor and room by room. The fire chief says it's too early to determine a cause.
