Vt. fire chief pleads guilty to thrown flashlight

BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The chief of the Bennington Rural Fire Department has pleaded guilty to throwing a flashlight at a vehicle he feared was going to hit him.
Joseph Hayes of North Bennington was charged in July with misdemeanor counts of disorderly conduct and unlawful mischief. The Bennington Banner reports in a deal with prosecutors, Hayes agreed to go before a community board to discuss what he did.
Police said Hayes was assisting with downed power lines last June when he saw a vehicle coming toward him. He shined his flashlight at it. When it didn't slow down or stop, he threw the flashlight
Fred Grant, the driver, said his vision was inhibited by rain. He said he didn't notice Hayes until he heard something hit his vehicle.
