Nassau County PD to improve English translation services

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says his office has reached agreement with the Nassau County Police Department to improve translation services for residents with limited English speaking ability.
    
Under the agreement, the department will provide all necessary interpretation and translation for crime victims, witnesses and investigation subjects. It also will try to recruit bilingual officers and make available translated materials and public notices.
    
According to Census data, roughly 2.5 million New Yorkers don't speak English as their primary language and have a limited ability to read, speak, write or understand it.
    
According to county officials, almost 15 percent of its 1.3 million residents are Hispanic.
    
More than 11 percent of its residents don't speak English well.
