SARATOGA SPRINGS - The curtain is about to come down on the Regal Cinemas at the Wilton Mall and the Latham Circle Mall.
Regal announced Tuesday that their numbers are down in both locations and they'll close up later this month.
Movie fans in Saratoga Springs expressed disappointment Wednesday.
"I think that's a sad situation because I know that a lot of people go there with their children and families," said Jack Walter.
"I'm very disappointed because I go there to see several movies and I think it's kind of not fair," echoed Tom Tanner of Schenectady.
But like a good Hollywood story, this one has a happy ending. Bow Tie Cinemas, which runs a six-screen theater in Schenectady, came in like a knight in shining armor Wednesday afternoon to announce that they'll do a major upgrade of the Wilton Mall space and re-open with stadium seating in November.
Bow Tie is rapidly becoming a major star in the local movie market. They'll also run a high-end 11-screen cinema now under construction in Saratoga Springs.
"They are a fantastic company to work with, making lots of decisions," said Sonny Bonacio, whose Bonacio Construction Co., is building the downtown theater for Bow Tie and expects to be done in time for a July opening.
"We're pouring concrete now. Structural steel should be on site February 22nd, so we are right there."
Regal's popular new state of the art theater in Clifton Park will remain open. That theater was apparently taking customers away from the Wilton and Latham locations, which had not been upgraded. Regal is also renovating its cinema at the Aviation Mall in Queensbury.
