TROY, N.Y. – Five different players scored for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men’s hockey team, which defeated Brown University, 5-1, in ECAC Hockey action, this evening at the Houston Field House. With the win – their seventh straight in league play – the Engineers improve to 13-11-5 overall (8-6-3 ECACH), while the Bears drop to 9-10-5 (5-7-5 ECACH).

RPI scored the first five goals of the game, including three on the power-play.

Freshman Mike Zalewski (New Hartford, NY/Vernon Vipers) opened the scoring 46 seconds into the game, when he tapped home a rebound off a Guy Leboeuf (West Palm Beach, FL/Cornwall Colts) shot for his sixth of the season. Senior Nick Bailen (Fredonia, NY/Indiana Ice) added a power-play goal – his ninth of the year – later in the period to make it 2-0 after a period of play.

The Engineers added to their lead at 8:19 of the second stanza, when freshman Mark Miller (Massena, NY/Omaha Lancers) batted in a rebound for his sixth of the season. Sophomore Mark McGowan (Toronto, ON/Oakville Blades) flew into the zone up the left wing and fired a shot on goal. The puck popped in the air for Miller, who knocked it in out of the air. Junior Bo Dolan (St. Paul, MN/Penticton Vees) earned the secondary assist.

Rensselaer added two more power-play tallies in the third period, as sophomore Jacob Laliberte (Rockland, ON/Cornwall Colts) and senior captain CJ Lee (Staten Island, NY/Green Bay Gamblers) both scored from close range. Laliberte’s goal, which came at 2:14 of the frame, was assisted by classmates Matt Neal (Minesing, ON/Stoufville Spirit) and Ryan Haggerty (Stamford, CT/U.S. National Dev. Team).

The Bears found the scoresheet at 4:56 of the third, as freshman Joe Prescott (Norwell, MA/South  Shore Kings) buried a one-timer from the right circle, off a feed from senior Marc Senecal (North Bay, ON).

RPI freshman goaltender Jason Kasdorf (Winnipeg, MB/Des Moines Buccaneers) stopped 30 of the 31 shots he faced to improve to 9-2-2. Brown senior Anthony Borelli (Grand Island, NY) made 28 saves, before being replaced by junior Marco De Filippo (Auronzo Di Cadore, Italy), five minutes in the third period.

Brown’s third-period goal snapped Kasdorf’s home shutout streak at 160:20.

The Engineers are back on the ice tomorrow night, when they host 10th-ranked Yale University at the Houston Field House (7pm). Brown visits Union College tomorrow (7pm).
