Fire rips through a Schenectady home early Sunday morning causing heavy damage.

The front portion of the home at 2092 Foster Ave went up in flames around 1:30am. Fire officials say they quickly located one of the residents who said everyone was out except their pets, three dogs and two birds.

All of the pets were reportedly rescued from the home. Officials say a responding officer was bit in the hand by one of the dogs and is being treated at Ellis for his injuries.

The Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents.
