WATERVLIET - A historic church has begun the process of dismantling the building.

The cross on top of Saint Patrick's steeple was removed Tuesday morning.

The property will be transferred to the Nigro Companies of Albany.

The developer wants to build a supermarket where the church stands.

There had been considerable opposition to removing the local landmark.
